In Cyprus, it is compulsory to have Third Party Car Insurance and you cannot drive without this policy. This is a policy that protects you if you have an accident with another vehicle and you are liable. This is different to Third Party Insurance in the UK as it does not cover anything to do with your vehicle in terms of fire and theft. It is literally the other vehicle and only covers up to 75000 TL towards that other vehicle. This can be increased for an extra premium.
In the past here in Cyprus, there was no such thing as a central database of customers and accidents across the island but this has recently been introduced and so all companies can see the history of car claims/accidents, and there is now a no claims database available for all Insurance companies and agents to see. The premium you pay for Insurance takes into account the value of your car, the age of Insured and the engine size of the vehicle as well as previous claim history. You can choose named driver policies or any driver policies here in Cyprus. A named driver policy is always cheaper than any driver.

Third Party also known as Trafik
Third Party Insurance comes with a standard 5 million Euro medical cover if you injure a third party or third parties with your car. The policy also includes a maximum of 75.000 TL worth of cover for damage to a third party property/vehicle or third parties in the case of an accident as part of the standard policy cover. For a higher premium, the cover of Third Party property/vehicle damage can be increased to 100.000 TL. If you wish to increase the cover to 100,000 from the standard, it will cost an additional 200 TL on top of your normal Third Party Premium. This is well worth considering especially at the moment when the exchange rate is so high. If you can recall 7 or so years ago when the exchange rate was around 2.3 TL to the pound then your 50000 TL of cover was worth around 21,000 GBP but at current rates this 75000 TL cover only covers around 20,000 GBP so almost the same value for an extra 25000 TL of cover but considering the amount of luxury high value cars on the road here, it’s not a very high amount of cover. So it is definitely worth considering an increase in cover as any expenses above that 75000 TL of damage would be your responsibility in the event of an accident. If you wish to cover your Third Party Policy for more than 100k TL then please talk to one of our advisors who can advise on the premiums involved in this.
